What is Zakat

Zakat is a compulsory form of charity in Islam. It is an obligation upon Muslims whose wealth exceeds the nisab threshold for one lunar year. It purifies wealth and supports those in genuine need.

Who Can Receive Zakat

Allah clearly defines the recipients of Zakat in Surah At-Tawbah (9:60). Zakat must be distributed only to the following eight categories:

  • 1. The Poor (Al-Fuqara): Those who have little or no income and struggle to meet basic living needs.
  • 2. The Needy (Al-Masakin): Those who have some income but not enough to live with stability or dignity.
  • 3. Zakat Administrators: Those entrusted with managing and distributing Zakat responsibly.
  • 4. Those Whose Hearts Are to Be Reconciled: Individuals who may be supported to strengthen faith or community ties.
  • 5. Those in Bondage: For freeing individuals from oppression or captivity.
  • 6. Those in Debt: People burdened by legitimate debts they are unable to repay.
  • 7. In the Cause of Allah (Fi Sabilillah): Those striving in ways that serve and uplift the community within Islamic guidance.
  • 8. The Wayfarer: Travellers stranded or cut off from their financial means.

How is Zakat Calculated

Zakat is calculated at 2.5% of qualifying wealth that has been held for one lunar year (Hawl), provided it exceeds the nisab threshold.

What Is Included in Zakat?

You calculate 2.5% of:

  • Cash and savings
  • Gold and silver
  • Business stock and inventory
  • Investments and shares
  • Rental income savings

What Can Be Deducted?

You may deduct:

  • Immediate debts due
  • Short-term liabilities
  • Outstanding bills payable now

What Is Nisab?

Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must possess before Zakat becomes obligatory. It is based on the value of 87.48g of gold or 612.36g of silver.
